If you have been following my blog, you know a few things about me. I believe that I am my best advocate. I don’t like to take drugs unless they are absolutely necessary and then only after I have tried alternatives that have been proven effective for others . I am much more interested in individual testimonials as to how a treatment or drug performed for them than I am in clinical studies where the results may have been altered or even disregarded in order to present the desired results so that a pharmaceutical company can attain their bottom line—money, and lots of it. I am aware that many alternative treatments are effective, sometimes more than drugs. I am also aware that often drug companies know that natural alternatives are effective but these natural products are unable to be patented which means there is no money in it for them. Until the pharma company is able to change a molecule in that natural substance so that it is no longer as God made it and still get the response they want, it is of no interest to them. I am also aware that we are all living in a very toxic world due to the pesticides put on our food, the additional hormones in our foods, the chemicals put in our water, the overall environment and the air we breath. All of this impacts our health. I feel that the last thing I need is to add more toxins to my body with unnatural drugs that block pathways causing side effects that in turn require more drugs and will eventually make me worse.
Therefore, I am on a quest for more natural alternatives to help me control the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis or MS. By the way, none of these are cures. However, if they can control symptoms or even cause remission, they are worth trying I think until something better comes along. (And remember, God is our Healer!) MS and other neurodegenerative diseases are greatly on the upswing. I believe that this is largely due to poor diets and the toxins we are subjected to on a regular basis. Therefore, for anyone facing one of these neurodegenerative disease states , the first step is to start eating a whole foods, nutrient dense diet and drink plenty of purified water. Find out what supplements you need and take them. I have written much about this in previous blogs so please refer back to them for specifics. Next I would recommend that you find a good Integrative doctor and have him check you for heavy metal toxicity. Make sure that he has you take a product to challenge the metals in you, thus pulling them out in order to be properly measured. Also, exercise is important even if it is a little bit throughout the day. Try to reduce stress. I find that stress increases my symptoms.
Once I got the diagnosis of MS, my Integrative doctor recommended a protocol for me to consider. It is called the PK Protocol named after Patricia Kline, PhD. It involves IV infusions of lipostabil which is a form of Phosphatidylcholine, Glutathione (a powerful antioxidant) and Leukovorin. (folinic acid). The following was written by Dr. Robert J. Rowen about this treatment under “EPL Phospholipids” along with some other alternative options to explore – http://www.alternative-medicine-digest.com/multiple-sclerosis.html.
Another treatment option that is listed in the above article is for Prokarin. I decided to start with Prokarin after discussing my questions and concerns with the formulator of this product, Elaine DeLack, MS, who also has MS, and has been symptom free since using Prokariin. For more information on Prokarin go to http://www.tldp.com/issue/11_00/ms.htm and to the official website for Prokarin, http://www.edmsllc.com/. The Prokarin disc is now available through Custom RX Shoppe Compounding Pharmacy in Bellingham, WA., ph: 360-685-4266. Your doctor must write a script for this product. When you talk with Elaine she will give you all of the information you need to know including some dietary and supplement adjustments. She will also give you information regarding possible insurance coverage if your coverage includes compounded products. Elaine can be reached at 866-222-3367.
Some of my previous blog entries discuss some other options including HBOT or Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which is considered first line therapy for MS in Great Britain. Low Dose Naltrexone is another product to discuss with your doctor. Refer back to the blog entry on the book “Honest Medicine” by Julia Schopick.
Let me know if you have found this entry helpful. Tell me how you are doing. If you have heard about another possible option, let me know so that I can do some research on it. We are pilgrims on a journey. Let’s help each other along the way.
